Water ordeal, aqua frigida judicium, was a form of medieval divine judgment, in which an accused person - often a woman suspected of witchcraft - was immersed in water. If she sank, she was declared innocent, while if she floated, she was believed to possess magical powers that declared her guilty. Etymologically, the term refers to the notion of trial. The research weaves a parallel between these medieval judgments and contemporary representations of the sporting body. A performance for a dancer and a guitarist, Ordeal by water explores a multitude of relationships to physical constraint, as it traverses a musical landscape of riffs, echoes and sound waves inhabiting space. The body, losing its strictly human form, water, clay and scenographic elements, in their encounters as in their ruptures, shape a moving plastic material in constant metamorphosis.
