On the occasion of a major donation from the Albers couple’s collection, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris invited Anna Chirescu, Ashley Chen, and Cheryl Therrien to create a Cunningham-inspired event, in connection with his years at Black Mountain College. They conceived a free reenactment of one of Merce Cunningham’s earliest performances, Dime a Dance, created at Black Mountain College in 1953—the official founding year of his company.
With very few archival traces, but guided by the concepts of chance, the original structure, and the names of the dances, they devised a new, playful and experimental version. Dime a Dance unfolds as a 50-minute danced board game of chance: 5 improvisers, 1 Game Master, 1 musician, 3 dances, 6 sound improvisation scores, 3 possible durations, 4 spatial parameters, and 5 dancers—a nearly infinite range of possibilities…
