ΕΚΚΡIΝΩ [secrete] is a site specific video dance film that articulates body and landscape. Shot in the volcanic site of the Dodecanese island of Nisyros, we follow the dancing wanderings of a woman through an arid landscape in search of a burial place for the remains of a young man who has just died. The landscape is treated as a character in its own right, in its ability to influence the performers’ bodily states and alter the scores previously created in the studio. As the film progresses, this immersion in desert spaces is revealed as a search for reconstruction after loss, and wandering as a quest for self and meaning. The question of performativity and emotional representation in the face of tragedy is central, notably in the creation of a score of grimaces. This material is complemented by a vocal repertoire: whispers, calls made into the void, like so many possible responses to the pursuit of meaning that this woman prolongs in a landscape of deserted humanity. Mourning becomes a paradoxical moment: destructive, of course, but also a source of hope for change, initiating the creation of new imaginaries and our collective history to come.
